In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the rainy season is a seasonal change closely related to human health. According to TCM theory, the rainy season is characterized by heavy dampness, which can easily lead to the generation of internal dampness in the body. Dampness is similar to moisture or water not moving and stagnant leading to blockage and causing a series of health problems such as joint pain, indigestion, and fatigue. Therefore, adopting some health practices during the rainy season can help balance internal dampness and maintain good health.
Here are some suggestions for TCM-based health practices during the rainy season:
1. Dietary adjustments: During the rainy season, it is recommended to choose light and easily digestible foods. Include more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains in your diet, while reducing the intake of greasy, spicy, and raw/cold foods. Dampness affects Spleen functioning which according to TCM plays a crucial role in the digestion and transportation of food consumed. The spleen is also involved in the conversion of energy from the food and water we consume.
Also along with the kidney, the spleen plays a vital role in water metabolism in the body and hates damp environments. Hence a person with spleen function impairment will suffer from various diseases of the body and mind during rain. You can also incorporate ingredients with spleen-strengthening and dampness-dispelling properties, such as Tulsi, Ginger etc.
2. Pay attention to preventing dampness: In the damp environment of the rainy season, it is essential to keep your body dry. Choose breathable clothing, ensure indoor ventilation, and avoid staying in damp environments for prolonged periods. Avoid wearing sneakers that may retain the water.
One of the most common mistakes we encounter is a mixture of cold and hot. most people when they get wet in cold rain they prefer to take a hot shower at home which is most likely to cause common cold symptoms, especially in children. It is ok to get wet in the rain and enjoy it that doesn’t cause the disease after all it’s just a shower of water! but what causes the disease to manifest is such a hot and cold mixture. Do not let your body be soaked in cold wet conditions for too long.
An easy way to understand that dampness has affected our well-being is to observe that the body has become heavy and the mind is disturbed. A good old-fashioned Tea with tulsi, cinnamon, ginger, and pepper should be able to expel that dampness and restore balance.
3. Moderate exercise: Engaging in moderate physical activity can help eliminate dampness from the body. Choose indoor exercises suitable for the rainy season, such as yoga, tai chi, etc., to promote blood circulation and the flow of Qi (vital energy). Heavy sports should be prevented excessive sweating can also lead to increased lethargy and in turn stagnation due to lack of Qi (vital energy).
4. Foot bath therapy: Feet are prone to dampness-related issues during the rainy season. You can soak your feet in warm water daily and add some dampness-dispelling herbs such as raw Ginger and Tangerine peel. This helps to disperse internal dampness. Take a bucket with water in it warm enough to make blood circulation faster but not too hot to prevent skin burns. Drop a few pieces of the above-mentioned herbs in it and soak your legs halfway between heel and knee for about 15-20 min. Long enough for the heat to be felt rising up to the knee and then take out your legs and wipe them dry.
5. Emotional well-being: The gloomy weather during the rainy season can easily affect mood and lead to low spirits. Maintaining a positive mindset, avoiding negativity, and engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation, such as listening to music or reading, help alleviate emotions and maintain good mental health. One of the best ways to alleviate mood is to enjoy the beauty of nature instead of feeling frustrated about it! Rain is a blessing of nature for us in tropical regions. Just the sight of blooming trees, the sound of rain falling on the roof and roads, and the smell of soil rising to meet the downpouring rain is a mood changer if you admire it.

Most important Don’t forget your umbrella or raincoat! if you do consider it a nice nature shower to get fresh!
