Acupuncture, which is an ancient but effective line of treatment through its drugless and near-painless mode of cure is slowly gaining ground in Goa with scores of patients relieved of years of pain and suffering.
Speaking to reporter at a briefing in the city one such practitioner, Dr M B Prabhu stated that acupuncture which involves pricking of special spots in the body with needles holds an advantage over some other line of treatment like allopathy as incurable diseases like paralysis, arthritis, spondylosis, asthma, mental retardation and a host of other chronic disorders have been cured.
Dr. Prabhu will hold a camp for the first time in the city for ten days from 15 July onwards at Tourist home Patto after holding similar camps in parts of the country for the last six years. The timings will be from 10.30 am to 1 pm and 4 to 6 pm.
Dr Prabhu stated that acupuncture originated in India and later its knowledge spread to China through Buddhist travellers and even during the time of Mahabharata. Pitamaha Bhishma was asked to lie on a bed of arrows by Arjun. The arrows were pricking the correct points of Shira Vedh in Ayurveda.
The treatment involves skilled techniques and there are 14 main channels in our body through which energy flows ceaselessly, positive and negative. Any imbalance causes problems and treatment involves regulating the glow of energy with the help of needles.
Dr Prabhu further stated that the needles are rendered safe through induction in formalene chambers and there is no fear of acquiring AIDS virus.
The advantages of acupuncture lie in the fact that there are no side-effects as compared to treatment involving intake of drugs and this line is effective where even allopathy has failed, he said.
A physically and mentally retarded boy of about ten years was brought to the site of the press conference along with some other treated patients. The boys had suffered from hepatitis at brith and this had made him a spastic. Within a few days of treatment, he was able to do some functions which he was finding difficult to perform earlier.
Prabhu allayed fears about the painfulness of the needless piercing the skin pointing out that the pain was slight and quite bearable.
Cupping method wherein cups or glasses are used on the stomach and back to remove pain is type of treatment similar to acupuncture. In local parlance cupping is called vetoz kaddop.
